SqueektoshiLink to this section
TL;DRLink to this section
- Squeektoshi is a male Syrian hamster, two months old, who runs the WHEELY9000 on livestream.
- His wheel activity is never forced, so quiet periods and periods without blocks are expected.
About SqueektoshiLink to this section
Squeektoshi is a white-orange male Syrian hamster. He is two months old as of October 2026, and he runs the WHEELY9000, the hamster mining device, on livestream.
His wheel activity is the work that settles on Ethereum and completes Squeek blocks. The care policy never forces or encourages running, so some periods produce no work and no blocks. The sensor counts passages; it cannot tell why the wheel moved.
Care policyLink to this section
Note
This care policy was developed based on information supplied by trusted sources linked below. It is under active development and will evolve alongside findings from peer reviewed hamster studies and hamster sports science.
Hamster welfare takes priority over mining output and livestream availability. Operators must meet the following requirements.
Voluntary activityLink to this section
- Record only freely chosen wheel activity.
- Never force exercise, wake the hamster for mining, or restrict food, water or rest to encourage running.
- Accept periods without block production.
HabitatLink to this section
House the Syrian hamster alone in an enclosure with:
- at least 100 × 50 cm of continuous floor space;
- 25–30 cm of burrow-supporting, unscented paper bedding;
- hides, tunnels and safe chews; and
- an accessible bath of low-dust, additive-free sand.
EnrichmentLink to this section
Provide daily opportunities to forage, burrow, explore and chew.
- Scatter or hide portions of the normal food ration in simple cardboard foraging toys.
- Provide deep bedding, tunnels, cork logs, hides and hamster-safe chews.
- Refresh small enrichment items periodically while preserving established nests and burrows.
- Enrichment must remain available independently of mining activity.
Wheel and equipmentLink to this section
- Provide a stable, solid-surface wheel at least 30 cm in diameter, increasing the size if needed for a straight back.
- Secure platforms and heavy furnishings.
- Keep cables and electronics beyond chewing reach.
- Sensors must not impede wheel movement.
Daily feedingLink to this section
- Provide complete hamster food, following the product ration and adjusting for weight and hoarding.
- Scatter-feed to encourage foraging.
- Offer a small washed vegetable portion daily, such as broccoli or courgette. Introduce new foods gradually, building to roughly one teaspoon in total.
- Fruit, plain cooked egg, mealworms, seeds and sprays are occasional supplements.
Water and hygieneLink to this section
- Keep fresh water continuously available; wash and refill the bowl daily and check any backup bottle.
- Remove uneaten fresh food before spoilage, wet bedding and soiled sand daily.
- Check the wheel weekly and clean sooner if soiled.
- Refresh bedding as needed, retaining clean familiar bedding, nests and dry food stores.
Rest and filmingLink to this section
- Preserve a regular day/night cycle and undisturbed daytime sleep.
- Schedule routine handling and disruptive maintenance while awake.
- Use night vision after dark; prevent filming equipment from introducing disruptive light, heat, noise or vibration.
- Check enclosure temperature daily and protect against overheating, draughts and direct sunlight.
HealthLink to this section
- Observe appetite, drinking, droppings, movement and behaviour daily; record weight weekly when practical.
- Contact a hamster-experienced veterinarian promptly for changes or illness, and urgently for breathing difficulty, diarrhoea or a wet rear, or severe lethargy.
- Telemetry supplements direct observation.
ResponsibilityLink to this section
- Assign a primary caretaker and backup.
- Keep a brief care and incident log.
- Suspend mining or filming whenever it interferes with care or veterinary advice.
