# Staking

> Stake SQK to a Squeek to raise its active power and its share of the SQK the hamster's work creates. This is Proof of Squeek, Squeekchain's proof of stake.

## TL;DR

- You stake SQK, the token, to a Squeek. It raises the Squeek's active power, up to the maximum its level sets.
- Active power sets a Squeek's share of each block's SQK, so holding a Squeek alone isn't enough.
- This is Proof of Squeek, Squeekchain's proof-of-stake system.

## How does staking work?

Each Squeek's level sets its [maximum power](https://docs.squeekchain.com/squeeks/power.md). The SQK staked to it decides how much of that power is active, and active power sets the Squeek's share of each block's SQK.

## What is Proof of Squeek?

Proof of Squeek is Squeekchain's proof-of-stake system for distributing the SQK the hamster's work creates. The hamster mines Squeek blocks with proof of work; Squeeks share each block's SQK by their active power.
